Summer Means Swimming

Summer means it is going to get real hot in Memphis. What better way to cool off in the hot summer season then to swim. For this pool to hold water you have to blow up the top sides of the pool. Once you do that when you fill it the outer edges rise up and hold the water in.

June Theme: Feet

The massive feet on this animal propel it in the water and help keep it afloat. You can see this polar at the beautiful Memphis Zoo.

Vacation: Morgan's MIll

Now we come to our last day on vacation and this picture was actually taken when I was driving home. This is Morgan's Mill outside of Hardy,AR. What most do not know is a battle was fought here in the Civil War. Stopping here is a must. The main creek is behind the mill, not what you see in front of it. In the past you could go into the mill, but someone got hurt and now they have it locked.

Norfork Lake: Dam Bait Shop

This is the Dam Bait Shop. Now hold on, I am not cussing. This is the Norfork Lake Dam Dam Bait Shop. If you do not get the joke watch the movie National Lampoon's Vegas Vacation. In the movie the characters are at the Hoover Dam and the character, Eddie, yells out do you have any dam bait.

Memorial Weekend Vacation: Fish Hatchery

Today we will visit the Norfork National Fish Hatchery Park located just below the dam. The picture above is to thank all the people and places who donated money to build the hatchery complex.

In side the main, only building, is where they hatch and keep the baby rainbow trout. Each of these concrete tanks holds thousands of new tiny fish. The water pumped into the tanks, both inside and outside, comes from the bottom of the lake to keep the fish at the right temperature. By the way the water is around 44F.

This is one of many outside tanks. When the trout get to be about hand size they are moved to one of these. They will stay here till the fish are about 18 months old.

Finally this is what you can see inside one of the outside tanks. Rainbow Trout.. In this particle tank these are adults and are about 1- 2 feet long. Well, hope you enjoyed a quick tour of the fish hatchery. See you tomorrow as I take you on another site seeing tour.

Memorial Day

This week I am going to step away from Memphis and show you a place some Memphians like to go during Memorial Weekend, on vacation.

Location: Norfolk Lake, Arkansas
Travel Time: Hours

In todays photo, this is the Norfork Lake Dam. This one dam keeps back all the water in the lake. People like to camp and fish below the dam. ON the other side is the lake and you can fish, boat, swim, swim. There are also islands out on the lake you can camp on.

monkey business

This photo was taken at the Memphis Zoo in the Primate Exhibit. There were students everywhere holding clipboards and taking notes. Apparently, these two kids were studying this ape. But by judging the way the ape is looking at them, it could seem the opposite way around. hehe.

hmmm. lunch!

Hhhhhmmmmm! Lasagna! I ate lunch yesterday with my parents at this nice Italian place called Carraba's. A bit pricey, but it sure is worth it. Before the waiter brought me my lasagna, I was given a bowl of some sort of spicy Italian chicken soup. Too bad I didn't think to take a photo of it. But it was tasty. I'm glad they gave me so much lasagna because there is enough to feed two people. Or at least to save some for lunch to eat the next day. Speaking of which....it's almost lunch time. **runs to fridge**

I love the warm weather and how it brings about new life. Yes it is another animal so I hope I am not boring you. Here we have a female duck laying on her eggs. Luckily she let me photograph her and I thanked her by giving her some bread. Hopefully she will be left in peace and we will see some baby ducks soon.

Something you don't see everyday.

Now this is something you do not see everyday. This little guy, a squirrel, was sitting on this red truck eating a pecan. I got within 4 feet of the animal before he climbed on the top of the cab of the truck. I guess he thought I was going to grab him. I looked in the bed of the truck and found his food source. This creature was stealing pecans out of a bucket the owner of the truck lift sitting in it. As soon as I got a good judging distance away, the squirrel climbed back down to his original perch and continued eating.

Fire Ant Season

Now that it is warm, you can find a fire ant mound just about anywhere. Their stings hurt. I was not saddened by opening up this fire ant mound. They were extremely mad that I did it and swarmed out by the thousands.

This is inside the house that I showed you all yesterday. It was ugly inside. The walls had holes in them, a door had been completed punched through, and a window was busted out. Some people really do not take care of what they have here.

May 2009 Theme Day: Shadows

This is my picture for the theme day. It is the carpet warehouse that I walk through every morning to get to me office. Even though the lights are on, shadows are all about. The atmosphere is just spooky sometimes the way the shadows play tricks on your eyes.

Honeysuckle Flowers

One thing you can smell real strong here in the south is Honeysuckle. You can find this plant all over. You usually see it growing on trees, bushes, or even fences. If you gentle pull apart the flower from the back, it releases sweeten water that is trapped inside the flower pedals. You can some times see kids with an armful of the plant. Humming birds love to feed from the flowers too.

Inside the local Wal-Mart they have built this structure. On top of that, they are digging up the floor inside of it. It was very loud when they were doing this and I hope whatever they are building they hurry up and build it.

Rebuilt Motorcycle

There was a guy fixing his motorcycle. From the looks of it it might have been in a wreck. There are bad scratches on one side of the bike. He is always working on it just about everyday, putting new parts on it. It looks to be custom built..

Bee Problem

Everyday I take my son on a walk when I get home. Well we ran into some un-invited guests on our path. Bees.. These guys were not there Monday, so in two days they built this large hive on a branch that hangs over the sidewalk we travel on. I hope pest control moves them some place else by tomorrow.

Cooked Mud-Bugs

Here is what the crawfish look like when they are done cooking and ready for your belly. Most os the meat is in the tail. Some people tear off the tail, eat the meat, then suck out the insides of the main body.

Signs outside says it is for rent for weddings, parties, and other events. Across the street is the New Daisy Theater where concerts are held. Maybe I will show you the New Daisy some day.

Bed Of White

I have seen this decorative flower bush for days now. I still can not find the name of these wonderful flowers. I am thinking of cutting a sample stem from this bush and grow my own. To the garden center store I go this weekend.

Pay Phones Becoming Endangered Species

This is a rare sight indeed. Due to so few people using pay phones, the telephone company here is taking them all down. Soon you will just see a pole where a phone once was.

Great Food Is Always Never Found In A Restaurant

Some of the greatest food found in is not always in a fancy or fast food restaurant. It can be found at a local truck stop. Fill your belly up on mashed potatoes, mac & cheese, catfish, fried chicken, coleslaw, buttered corn, corn bread. Sometimes I hate to admit it, the food is better then what mom makes.

Dark Scary Clouds

This morning the clouds over head were very dark. The even scarier part of it was they were low and everything outside was still, no wind. I heard on the news that severe weather rolled across the city last night but thankfully nothing happened in the city.

Confused Graffiti

I drive by this light pole everyday and see the smiley face graffiti. With the question mark over its head I wonder if the person who spray painted it there meant for it to be confused.

This is the biggest pizza place in Memphis, Incredible Pizza Company. Not only is it all you can eat pizza, inside is a mini golf course, go-cart track, and games of chance. Come when it opens during the weekends. The line to get in can be a 100 people long out the door.

We as humans have thought of just about everything. This is probably one of many vending machines throughtout Dillards stores that dispenses iPods. First swipe your credit, then select what you want, and finally out it comes to you.
